A roundtable session on building and creating an identity with your choir. With examples of successful choirs and ensembles from Europe and beyond.

Founding a choir is one thing, but developing and building a successful choir or ensemble with its own identity is another. In this round table, successful examples of choirs and ensembles from Europe and beyond that distinguish themselves with a clear identity will be discussed. Which choices can, must or may be made to develop an identity. What challenges do you face and how can you deal with them?

Neil Wallace - moderator

Neil Wallace is Scottish and is the artistic director of Haarlem’s The Big Sing. Before moving to the Netherlands, he was CEO of Cardiff’s Chapter Arts Centre and deputy director of Glasgow 1990, the city’s Cultural Capital of Europe programme. Wallace opened and programmed Cardiff’s ground-breaking Tramway venue. He created Offshore Cultural Projects, before being appointed director of the municipal concert hall and theatre in Haarlem. In 2007, Wallace co-designed a Masters Degree in music programming for the ArtEZ Conservatory, holding the post of Associate Professor until 2013. He is married to the Dutch-American composer Vanessa Lann and has just co-founded Pilgrim Harbour, a new festival in Delfshaven, Rotterdam to mark the 400th anniversary of the departure of the Founding Fathers to America in 1620.

Lionel Meunier

Lionel Meunier is internationally renowned as the founder and artistic director of the award-winning Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis. He is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic and highly acclaimed artistic leaders in the fields of historical performance and choral music active today.

Boštjan Usenik

Boštjan Usenik (Slovenia) was one of the driving forces behind what is now the vocal orchestra phenomenon Perpetuum Jazzile. During his years as president, and later general manager, of the ensemble, he oversaw the production of more than a dozen CD’s, DVD’s and vinyl albums, as well as collaborations with partners like the UEFA, Disney and Renault

Donna Lewis is a music manager and is one of the main forces behind the management of ZO! Gospel Choir. She has a broad network in the music industry and works for different, international artists.
