DEVOTIONS: Finding musical freedom – Basilio Astulez
Break the rules of performing classical music!
In this LAB, you work together with choir conductor Basilio Astulez and experience his approach of creating a versatile performance from basic musical ingredients. Together, you revisit some of the classics (who hasn’t heard of Palestrina, Orff or Monteverdi?) and create a performance that breaks the rules of a conventional concert.
For years, Basilio has been a welcome guest at Europa Cantat and other events by the European Choral Association. The ateliers he leads always inspire and give food for thought, taking a unique approach to music and the audience’s experience. During this LAB, you have the opportunity to dive inside the mind of this master of musical experience and co-create a unique performance in the process.
An ensemble of enthusiastic singers will be present during the full duration of the LAB (1,5 days). You’ll see Basilio at work, as well as take the stage and work with or join the choir. Basilio, the participants (that’s you!) and the choir come together in an intense session without any defined results.
When joining this LAB, it is advised to learn a few short pieces by heart, which will be provided on forehand. Some time before the event, you can also take part in an online meeting with Basilio where he ‘sets the stage’. This way you spend your time in this LAB as efficient as possible.
Timeschedule for this LAB
This LAB takes place on Friday 29th July from 9.30 – 12.00 hrs and Saturday 30th July from 9.30 – 12.00 hrs and from 14.00 – 17.00 hrs. The presentation of the LAB is scheduled on Saturday between 17.00 – 17.30 hrs. As a participant you are unable to visit any other sessions during these days.
Apart from the final presentation (Saturday 30 July, 17.00-18.00) you can visit this LAB as a passive participant. Entry is possible only with a lanyard, in the mornings between 11.00-12.00 hrs.
How a LAB differs from a regular workshop
A LAB differs from a regular workshop for choral conductors. A LAB is not about following a leader, but about creating content together: both the session leaders and participants operate on an equal level to get the best result possible. Or fail together. Are you up to this?
Special needs for this LAB
Please note that at the moment it is not longer possible to register for this LAB, as it is already full. Once in Utrecht, you can check at the festival desk if there is still a possibility to join, but we cannot guarantee this. We’re very sorry for this.
